Since 1982 the Castiglione’s have tried to keep the pub as traditional as possible, making only minor adjustments where necessary. The focus is very much on quality both with food and drinks, and above all service. It has been described as having “a locals atmosphere within the city centre”. In September 2009 the Castiglione’s purchased the freehold from Punch making the Maypole one of very few free houses in the centre and able to sell a greater selection of real ales and more importantly more local beers from smaller breweries.

Great homemade Italian and traditional English dishes.  Belgium bottled beers and Franziskaner on draught.

Ale magazine, Spring 2011 reports - "Thornbridge Jaipur IPA has become a fixture at The Maypole.  This magnificant 5.9% ale is also regularly available at The Kingston Arms."  Also Fellows ales now available here

Explorer Magazine reports in May 2011 - "Run by the Castiglione family, this city centre pub (close to the Park Street multi-storey car park) has an excellent reputation for its real ales, having won a CAMRA Real Ale Champion award last year. It always has 8-10 pumps on, and serves regional brews that might include Oakham Inferno, Milton Brewery’s Pegasus, Elgoods Black Dog or Nethergate Old Growler. The pub also serves a mean cocktail and has a growing reputation for its food."

The Castiglione family, who have run this city centre pub for over 30 years, bought the freehold from Punch Taverns in 2009. It has since become a showcase for quality micro-brewery beers, many of them local. This earned Bar Manager Vincent the Branch's first Real Ale Champion award in 2010. The interior comprises two rooms either side of the bar plus a large upstairs function room. A pleasant sun-trap patio also provides covered space for smokers. Food focuses on home-cooked Italian dishes. Buntingford Maypole is a golden hoppy house beer (3.8%).
